About IDP
The processes for obtaining a legal name change or an identity document with a name and gender not assigned at birth are complex and expensive. In late 2016, NYU Law students started the Identity Documents Project so that they and their fellow students could help guide people through those processes. While we do not provide legal advice, we do work with community members to provide education, resources, and other assistance related to legal name changes and identity documents.

IDP now holds multiple trainings each year to teach students and members of the community how to help TGNCI community members change their names and obtain accurate government-issued IDs. While we are based in New York City, our services are not limited to those in New York State. Everyone who fills out our intake form is matched with an advocate who assists in taking the necessary steps to get the IDs that the client needs.
IDP also raises funds throughout the year so that we can pay associated fees. As long as we have the funds, any client who requests assistance paying for their name change or new ID will receive it - no questions asked. |
